Winning that hard won reputation as a respected chef is down to much more hard work than a liking for the idea of cooking juicy, tasty food. not everyone can be a chef' in the same way as not everyone can be an artist, a politician, an accountant or a car salesman'. So clearly you need to ask yourself if you truly want it and have or are wishing to work hard to gain the properties needed to make a successful career as a chef.
Ask yourself some hard questions. For example, are you creative enough? Are you prepared to study the art of culinary preparation?
Your next step should be to gain experience of food preparation, cooking, working in a busy kitchen and so on. Experience is the best way to learn, so how can this be done? Well, there are many ways - such as joining a small restaurant or being instructed by an experienced chef as an learner. But there is a great deal of merit in attending an intensive course run by a trustworthy culinary or cooking school. This is because education paired with experience is an unconquerable first step.
And what will you gain by taking this path? Well, learning how to cook with style requires the learning numerous of practical skills, which can only be achieved by repeatedly performing them. Schooling will give you a good platform on which to build, as you will gain much 'active' chef training performing tasks yourself, under expert guidance.
You will get a taste of what is to come in terms of the requirements and expectations your future employers will place on your level of service and presentation. Check some job descriptions and you will note that good communications and organizational skills are vitally important also, and a cooking school will provide training and experience in this view of the culinary arts.
Even if and when you become a chef, there is much still to learn. You will find that in larger restaurants or hotels, there may be many chef positions, organised in a hierarchical structure, so at first you may be at the bottom of the ladder. Hard work and commitment learnt on a cooking course will be invaluable in this case, and will give you the backing up, you need to keep going in the right direction - onwards and upwards!
The Gables School of Cookery has been providing four-week intensive training courses to students for eight years now. The courses are proper for new to experienced cookery students, aged between 15 and 80+ years old, and especially for those interested in how to become a chef. The courses cover a wide range of subjects from Italian cookery to Thai, from being a ski chalet chef to working on a racing yacht.
