Louisville, Kentucky (Evil Dead: The Musical) August 11, 2009 – What could go wrong when five college students take a spring break trip to an old abandoned cabin in the woods? If you’re a fan of the old “Evil Dead” films starring Bruce Campbell, then you already know the answer. It’s not going to be a camping trip with s’mores and wiener roasts, but plenty of hysterical demonic possessions, chainsaw dismemberments, and of course –blood. So much blood in fact that the first two rows of the theater are designated “the SplatterZone”
Based on Sam Raimi’s 80’s cult classic Evil Dead films, Evil Dead: The Musical unearths the old familiar story:
“Boy and friends take a weekend getaway at abandoned cabin, boy expects to get lucky, boy unleashes ancient evil spirit, friends turn into Candarian Demons, boy fights until dawn to survive.”
As musical mayhem descends upon this sleepover in the woods, “camp” takes on a whole new meaning with uproarious numbers like “All the Men in my Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons”, “What The F%@# Was That?” and “Do the Necronomicon”
With the approval of both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, the first musical version of the film was staged and enjoyed a successful workshop in Toronto and subsequent performances at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal in 2004. The Off-Broadway production opened on November 1, 2006 and ran through September 6, 2008.
“This show is going to be something fun for people looking for something fun to do this October, and for fans of the theatre or haunted houses – this is your E-ticket for a bloody good time,” Co-Producer Jake Wheat explained. “I personally don’t want to be soaked in blood, so I will be sitting in the seats that aren’t in the blood splatter.”

The Louisville, Kentucky production is being Co-Produced by Joey Arena and Jake Wheat, two Louisvillians who are familiar with the art of theatrical illusion. Joey Arena has been with the Alley since it’s inception, and was the Creative Director and Designer of the award winning haunted attraction The Baxter Avenue Morgue from 2002 to 2006, as well as having a professional background in theater arts and stage illusions. Jake Wheat, with his background in theater from Murray State University and his background in marketing with Universal Records, makes this team a dynamic duo.
The production team for Evil Dead: The Musical is comprised of some of Louisville’s most creative professionals. The team’s credits include film, stage, magic, and haunted attractions. The Director has won national awards for his horror themed design and direction; the Choreographer is from The Louisville Ballet; the Music Director from Actor’s Theater of Louisville, and the Make-up Effects Artists are working Hollywood professionals with film credits including Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Magnolia, Goldmember, and many more.
