PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 11, 2009 -
The planting soil that will be used for your organic vegetable garden will need to be soil that will be able to help facilitate the growth of your vegetables. When you grow your own organic vegetables you will need to know how to handle pH levels in your organic soil.

The pH of your soil refers to how acidic or alkaline your soil is. You will need to get your soil to have a neutral pH level for your organic vegetables to grow properly.

You will need to first perform a soil test to find your soil’s pH level. You can generally get this done by gathering some soil that you plan on using and pour water onto it. A pH tester should then be placed into the soil. For more details on this type of test visit http://www.mumsgrowyourownorganicvegetables.com

If your planting soil has a pH level of 7 then it will be neutral. This is generally the best level that you can grow vegetables in. If your pH level is too high then the soil will be alkaline and if it is low it will be acidic. In these cases you will need to add materials to your soil.

For alkaline soil you will need to get an acidic material that will help to even out the pH level in the planting soil. Elemental sulfur is a good option in that it is organic and is especially acidic. Although you can get your kids to help you with putting this onto your soil you should have them wear protective gloves for handling it. You should visit http://www.mumsgrowyourownorganicvegetables.com
for assistance.

You should use only two pounds of elemental sulfur for every hundred square feet that the material will be used in. You should get this applied every three months.

In the case that the planting soil is acidic an alkaline material should be added. Limestone is one of the best things to add to your soil. This type of rock is an alkaline material that will absorb acid. This material is much easier for your kids to handle.

You will need to handle pH levels in your organic soil for your garden to work out right. Your soil will need to have a neutral pH level that can help to sustain the organic vegetables that you will be growing.
