PRLog - Aug. 11, 2009 - CARDIFF, U.K. -- Hyderabad, India the venue for the 2009 World Badminton Championships, today saw RVBA (supported by Memory Lane Cakes) pair Richard Vaughan and Sarah Thomas of Badminton Wales, versus World Top Badminton pairing Thomas Laybourn & Kamilla Rytter Juhl from Denmark.

The start of the World Badminton Championships has been marred by the withdrawal of the England Team due to security issues. However all the Badminton Wales players remained on assurances from the British High Commission that all fears were totally unfounded and there had been no such threats, or evidence of such against the event.
Richard Vaughan player/coach from the RVBA at the World Badminton Championships commented “The security has been everything I would expect for a major championship in the region. I would have thought everyone would expect a lot of security, and it’s certainly not something we are not use to in Badminton as many of ours events are based in Asia, in particular Indonesia where only a few weeks ago there was a major terrorist attack. India is certainly no worse.”
In the Second round of the Mixed doubles draw Badminton Wales Vaughan and Thomas went down 15-21, 12-21 to the world Number six pair Laybourn and Juhl.
The match started off close with the Danes edging the first set at the break 11-10. However in the second set the Danes started to control the front court more efficiently. With the Danes 15-13 in front the Badminton Wales pair always had a chance of drawing the set back.  The more experienced Danes however closed the set out 21-15. In the second game it was a similar affair with the Danes 11-5 at the break, before being dragged back to 16-12. Some unforced errors by the Badminton Wales pair ensured the match for one of the tournament favourites.
Badminton Wales Vaughan commented “We actually did really well. I thought we might find it more difficult that, but in the rallies we were very tactically aware and had them taking us very seriously. In the end it came down to a simple basic error rate around serve and on the third shot which cost us the match. Sarah is only sixteen years old so it’s a great experience to play at that level, and to do so well against one of the World’s top pairs.”
In the second round of the Ladies Doubles event tomorrow Sarah Thomas teams up with big sister Rachel Thomas who is ranked 64 in the World to take on 7th seeds, Wen Hsing Cheng & Yu Chin Chien from Chinese Taipei.
RVBA Head Coach Richard Vaughan commented "It’s going to be another tough game tomorrow, but it is the World’s strongest Badminton event so it was always going to be tough. Hopefully the young girls can gain a lot of experience which can move them in to a good place for the future."
The three RVBA players have recently received support from Accounting Software Direct (www.accountingsoftwaredirect.co.uk ) which has allowed them to play the World’s leading event in the build up to the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
