With no chance of escape from the sky, death appears on silent wings.
The second wife and the Taliban leader in Pakistan,Baitullah Mehsud have been apparently killed by a suspected U.S. drone. In northwestern Pakistan the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dropped two missiles, targeting the home of Mehsud’s father-in –law. At first it was thought that Mehsud was not at home at the time of the attack.
In the region, the only military that has the capability of operating missile launching UAVs, is the United States. It is considered that Taliban key leaders have been targeted by the Pakistani military. Hideouts belonging to Mehsud are often shelled by both Pakistani and possible U.S. drones. Washington, however, does not take responsibility for these attacks.
In December 2007, Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan Former Prime Minister was gunned down at a political rally. The current president of Pakistan is Asif Ali Zardari, is Bhutto’s widower. The Pakistani Taliban chief was behind the assassination of Bhutto, was recently confirmed by one of Mehsud’s close assistants, though Menshud denied being responsible.
The Tehrik-e-Taliban militant group leader Mehsud was suspected of organizing dozens of other suicide attacks In Pakistan. Several weeks ago the Pakistani army revealed it was preparing for a major offensive against Mehsud’s network. More than 100,000 soldiers have been deployed by Pakistan, to flush the militants and their local supporters in North and South Waziristan tribal regions out.
UAVs can range in size from nothing larger than a model aircraft, weighing just a few ounces, to machines the size of a Boeing 737. They have low airspeeds and long flight times. A demand for real-time video from the drones has been growing at 300% per annum. The UAVs need computer bandwidth, trained crews and linguists to go over intercepted communication between insurgents.
