Salt Lake City, UT – A young woman from Bountiful, Utah has received a substantial settlement for her many injuries she sustained in a Utah car accident. Katie was involved in a violent car accident on May 29, 2008, leaving her with injuries that would take over a year to heal, as well as substantial medical bills.
Katie was riding in the passenger seat in her friend’s car that afternoon. The driver began talking on her cell phone, and became inattentive at the wheel. She veered out of traffic, jumped a curb, and smashed into the back of a city worker’s pickup truck. The car was almost completely destroyed, and rescue workers had to use the Jaw of Life to excavate the driver.

Katie saw several doctors throughout the year to treat her injuries. She attempted decompression and core strengthening to ameliorate her pain, as well as trigger point injections in her lower back and neck. When these methods did not work, she had to undergo general anesthesia and receive a microsurgical exploration and lumbar discectomy in April of 2009.
After a year of chronic pain, Katie finally experienced some physical relief. However, her road to recover has been physically and emotionally challenging. She missed a significant amount of high school due to the magnitude of her injuries and surgery. Her chronic pain and discomfort caused her to miss out on many social activities with her friends and peers. She will likely need an additional surgery down the road, as well.
“This is another tragic example of the dangers of distracted driving,” Mr. Christensen said. “Cell phones are an extremely dangerous driving hazard. Katie sustained serious injuries and a painful and stressful recovery, all because of a driver talking on the cell phone. We all need to turn off our phones before we get behind the wheel to help prevent another accident like this.”
