(Center Moriches, New York) — With the recent economy forcing families to cut back on discretionary spending, many children are staying home this summer rather than spending time at camp. While these summer camps are facing empty cabins, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck has 308 campers this summer — an astonishing 90% occupancy rate.
According to a survey of accredited summer camps the American Camping Association, 48.5% of those who responded reported a decrease in enrollment from last year. On average, there was a 10% decrease in enrollment as camps seek financial support from enrolling families.
“The enrollment at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a reflection of the growing needs for the programs that we provide,” said Jean Gilrane, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “We have an experienced and caring staff on hand to take care of these wonderful children.”
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is seeing a healthy enrollment because of the healthy environment they provide for their campers. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck realizes that summer camp is no longer just about outdoor activities but personal and social growth.
There are more than 40 staff members — including counselors, a nurse and program director — tending to the needs of the young campers.
