Bihar has been the province of several civilizations; the most celebrated amidst them being Mithila and Bhojpuri. At one this culture extended an area bigger than the nowadays Madhya Pradesh. The Mithila civilisation has many outstanding characteristics like Mithila paintings, the Maithili spoken language, Mithila folk music and the most illustrious Panjikaran system. Mithila features in the Indian mythology and as well in the Ramayana (Hindu holy books).
