Just in time for back to school ideas, Julie Deane’s handmade British satchels are finding fans in the US market. These stylish, functional leather bags are perfect for students whatever their age. Designed to last throughout the years, they are available in many sizes and popular colors.
A little over a year ago, Ms. Deane was trying to find a satchel for her children like the ones they had seen on Harry Potter. She looked everywhere for a satchel that would look great and not get worn, grubby or stained quickly. She couldn’t find what she was looking for, so a few months later she found a manufacturer in England, and The Cambridge Satchel Company was born.
Two years later and the color range has expanded from chestnut and black to vintage, dark brown, black, navy, red, pink, purple and yellow. The satchels are available in four sizes, the largest, with the option of an additional top handle as well as the very long, fully adjustable shoulder strap which is named a “Batchel”. Many can be made for use as backpacks with appropriate straps. They have been sold to celebrities, been featured in national newspapers and magazines and shipped worldwide…but all still from her kitchen in Cambridge, where Ms. Deane and her mother personally wrap each package!
According to Ms. Deane, “There is a stylish element to them, with a retro appeal because they are all hand sewn in real leather on sewing machines by four ladies and are embossed with our logo. They provide the user with something to feel proud of; a quality, stylish product that will last and whose looks actually improve with age”.
These no-fuss, no-nonsense bags have also found a trendy following and have been embraced by stylists and designers as consumers turn to the vintage look and want a great looking practical bag. The Cambridge Satchel Company bags have recently been featured as a “hot trend” in this month's issue of UK Cosmopolitan.
