In a purely aesthetic sense, the evening of Monday, August 3 was one of a soft but increasing electric ambiance. The crowds began to trickle, and then pour, into the famous historic Grand Ballroom prior to the appointed hour of 6 p.m. Even as the hotel events personnel - expertly professional , by the way - were lighting the candles in the elegant reception room for the premium bar and buffet which preceded Anthony Peake's lecture, a gathering of Manhattanites - of increasing volume - was making its appearance felt. Entering the mezzanine area, a distinct roar could be heard as far away as the elevator area.
The sweeping Italianate windows with the silhouetted backdrop of Madison Avenue served as a dramatic symbol of an apparent fate at work behind the scenes. A group of some 300 members of the New York intelligensia, in one of the most beautiful of Midtown's venues, was an apt staging for the debut of a European theorist whose ascension has begun, and who will be made stronger by the feedback of his critics.
