The 6th Annual Hike the Highlands Festival is pleased to announced their will be 24 guided hikes in this year's festival from September 11-20, 2009. The festival will visit a number of communities along the Cabot Trail including Ingonish, White Point, Sugarloaf, Cape North, Meat Cove, Pleasant Bay, Cheticamp, North River and Indian Brook.
The festival will feature nine new hikes in 2009 including Roberts Mountain, Le Chemin du Buttereau, MacIntosh Brook, Coastal, Lone Shieling, White Point to Burnt Head, Freshwater Lake Look-off, Red River to Otter Brook, and Smokey Towers. Four popular hikes return from past years - Meat Cove, Cape St. Lawrence/Lowland Cove, Salmon Pools, and Red Island.
"The goal is to provide hikers with choices each day," says Lisa Dixon, Chair, Guide Committee with various distances. Dixon states hikers should wear hiking boots to provide good support and protection for your feet. "Hike the Highlands Guides and Sweeps are important part of our team and bring knowledge, safety and experience to each guided hike, " says Tom C. Wilson, Chair, Hike the Highlands Festival. Wilson states our guides are trained each each year and this year's training includes GPS and Geocaching.
The Highlands of Cape Breton are situated on the world-renowned Cabot Trail and offer some of the most spectacular coastal scenery and hiking trails in the world. A portion of this significant example of Canada's natural heritage has been designated as a national park. Thirteen of the 24 guided hikes feature in this year's festival are within the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and other eleven trails are located in the Highlands of Cape Breton.
