Aug. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- It’s said all dreams for great success start with a sign.  For Cathie Bertino of New York State, who knew it would be something as simple as a piece of cardboard.

Bertino’s dream started in December last year when her son and daughter-in-law gave her a laptop for Christmas.  Upon opening it up, she instantly looked at it and said, “This is how I’m going to make my million.”  At the time, she thought she was going to write children’s books.

Each night as she sat down to work on her future best-sellers, she struggled to keep her laptop and its accessories altogether.  Her mouse, mouse pad, cords, pen and pad always slipped off and fell to the ground.

A few weeks later, she found herself back at home in Saugerties.  Her daughter, an interior designer, had recently received a shipment in the mail and had a tri-fold piece of cardboard she was about to throw away.  Bertino, who is known in her house as the Glue-All Grammie, quickly applied her MacGuyver-type skills and turned it into a lap desk for her laptop.

As she carried her cardboard creation from room-to-room, her kids would poke fun and say, “There goes Cathie with her cardboard.”  The teasing led Bertino to the store where she picked out a fancy leopard print fabric.  She took it home, broke out the glue gun, wrapped up the cardboard, slapped a mouse pad on it, and created the first prototype for what is now known as the Designer Lap Topper (affectionately called The DLT).  Everyone loved it and wanted one of their own.

"I made several different versions out of different materials, none out of cardboard, and test marketed them on friends and family in six states," Bertino says.  "I received so many rave reviews that I applied for a patent, took the DLT to an inventor's show and found the inspiration to create my own business."

Bertino now has two versions that she makes by hand; a bigger one for an external mouse, a smaller one for use with a touchpad.  Both have risers that provide proper ventilation, a slip guard that grips and keeps your laptop in place, a bundling strap that keeps power cords out of the way, and the larger version has an affixed mouse pad that doubles as a pocket.  The DLT’s are sold online through her website http://www.designerlaptopper.com, and in a few select retail stores in the New York City area.
