WeatherBug operates a network of approximately 8,000 weather stations. WeatherBug partners with television stations in most markets, including WIVB-TV in Buffalo, which use the stations as part of their weather forecasting.
In 2004, WeatherBug’s parent, AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc., the National Weather Service and the Department of Homeland Security entered into a public-private agreement fore WeatherBug stations to be used by Homeland Security to assess weather conditions in the event of a disaster. The agreement was expanded in January 2007 to allow the National Weather Service and National Oceanic Atmospheric Association access to the WeatherBug data. The Seaway Trail Center’s weather station will participate in these efforts.
The Lake Erie Seaway Trail Center serves the public interest by providing traveler information and services, tourism promotion of the Hamburg and Buffalo–Niagara regions through a marketing focus on the Seaway Trail tourism corridor, and in offering a community resource to local residents for group meeting space. Visitors to the center discover educational exhibits on maritime heritage, natural history, architectural, cultural, and historical resources of Buffalo-Niagara, free waterfront access, and other opportunities for passive recreation at the Lake Erie shoreline site.
