SAN DIEGO – There’s a new sports champion in San Diego. Local Muay Thai star Dave Nielsen walked into the ring last weekend in an International Kickboxing Federation California Cruiserweight Kickboxing Title bout and walked away the champion in 1 minute and 10 seconds of the first round.
“I am thrilled to walk away with an IKF Muay Thai belt in front of the hometown fans,” Nielsen said. “Derrick Galanis was a strong fighter with a dangerous style. I was fortunate to find openings quickly and take advantage.”
Dave Nielsen, the owner of the American Boxing, MMA and Fitness Center in Pacific Beach, was looking forward to his title fight which took place last weekend in his adopted hometown at the 4th and B nightclub in downtown San Diego. The event was held in conjunction with Comicon.
For Nielsen, the title was a long time coming. After years of fighting competitively, he took nearly six years off to focus on training the next generation of fighters and fitness seekers at his training center. Recently, he returned to the ring, where he walked away with the first belt of his long career.
“My students had been encouraging me to return to the ring…I got the call and before the matchmaker finished his sentence, I said yes,” Nielsen said. “I’m especially happy to have been able to fight for my students and my adopted home town.”
Nielsen’s next fight is planned for September 12 at The Playboy Mansion.
“For some reason, I’m particularly excited about this next fight,” he joked. “But seriously, I am excited to get in the ring again and fight for the pride of my students, my town and my style of kick boxing.”
