Kidnapping takes on a whole new perspective when it involves ripping a nearly full-term baby from the mother’s womb, before murdering the mother.

A small apartment building in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States, has become the centre of a grim homicide investigation. The mutilated body of a mother of three wrapped in bedding, was discovered by the landlord when he went to check out a foul smell in a second floor closet.

Darlene Haynes aged 23 years age had been eight months pregnant. She was the unfortunate former neighbour of 27 year-old Alex Dion and his 35 year-old partner, Julie Corey.

Dion had tried to break off the relationship with Corey in October last year. The couple had been dating on and off for two years. Corey told Dion she was pregnant, in a last attempt to salvage the relationship with Dion. Corey came up with a morbid scheme to get hold of their ex-neighbour’s unborn child.

Just nine months later, Corey told Dion she was taking the victim, her friend, Darlene Haynes, to the local supermarket. Dion received several calls that night from Corey saying she had gone into labour and her water had broken. She called Dion eventually saying she had just given birth to a baby girl.

In an interview Dion said "I am so confused. I don't know what to think. I thought I had a brand-new daughter".

Corey went to Hayne’s apartment and killed her. She cut open Hayne’s stomach and inexpertly removed the eight month old foetus, tying the umbilical cord with a ribbon. She then stowed Haynes body into a closet.

Neighbours were used to hearing screaming and arguing from the apartment that Haynes had shared with her ex-boyfriend. Haynes had a restraining order issued against Roderiquez and the neighbours reported that Haynes had become very lonely and depressed.

Corey returned from the hospital just five hours after a so-called 20 minutes labour. Corey’s friends were skeptical. Corey used a bottle of baby formula, while pretending to breast feed the baby underneath a blanket.

Haynes was known to Corey and Dion through her estranged boyfriend, Roberto Rodriguez and father of her 18 month old daughter. Hayne’s two other children aged 5 and 3, are in the care of Hayne’s mother.

Corey was arrested in a homeless shelter, where she had the baby with her. The workers at the shelter had become curious about Corey’s lack of knowledge about the 1.8 k baby. Corey is being held on a $US2 million bail.

There have been several other incidents where women have pitilessly cut an unborn baby from its mother’s womb.
