Upcycled Clothing Company Looptworks Offers a Solution to the Growing Problem of Textile Waste

Portland, OR -- Every year, more than 20 million tons of post-consumer textiles go to waste. Every week, the average textile factory produces 60,000 pounds of pre-consumer waste. Every day, piles of excess fabric cuttings in landfills grow higher.

The Looptworks founders looked at this process and decided make a change. Looptworks aims to repurpose these first quality, abandoned materials to create, long-lasting and limited-edition clothing and accessories. Using no new materials, everything in the Looptworks line is uniquely created from excess.

"I've been working in the apparel industry for 25 years. After visiting factories and witnessing the amount of waste created in manufacturing clothing, I felt a responsibility to somehow offer a solution to this growing problem," says Gary Peck, Co-Founder. Buying organic is less harmful than conventional cotton; however, it is still a huge tax on the world's limited resources. For example, it takes 400 gallons of water to make one organic cotton T-shirt. Even more shocking, it requires about 1800 gallons of water to manufacture one pair of denim jeans. Looptworks offers a low impact option for its customers by using what already exists. They hope people will start thinking about how to repurpose existing resources instead of creating new ones.

Unlike traditional apparel manufacturers that present huge seasonal collections, Looptworks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXQxEnvSbh8) offers fresh, limited-edition collectibles. So instead of adding to the number of tons of wasted fabric, Looptworks will actually number its products based on the quantity of materials that are found for each item.

"These numbers speak for themselves," adds Scott Hamlin, Co-Founder. "We need to change the way we think about consuming. In the process, we hope to inspire a generation to reduce their impact on the planet."
