The bhangra-pop singer, Mika has just accomplished a fresh feat. In an experiment of sorts there would be Bhangra on South Indian beats. Mika is singing a funky mixture of Punjabi and Tamil sounds for a specially conceived song for Quickgun Murugan. Instead of Makke di Roti and Sarso da Saag the lyrics would have Idli, Appam and Sambhar mixed with the robust bhangra sounds.
“It’s certainly for the first time that I am trying something like this. I realised how funky it is, the mixed sound itself is very catchy. Bhangra sounds are no longer just Punjabi but are universally identifiable. I have immensely enjoyed doing this and I am sure that in coming days it will be a runway hit in pubs and discos,” says Mika. Well Mika we’ll leave it to the Janta to decide how far this track takes you.
Besides his swinging career, Mika also revels in the bad boy image he has chosen to flaunt. According to him, people in India may not “truly understand this image” but in the West, most pop singers have carefully cultivated the bratty image. “Be it 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg or Puff Daddy, their reputation precedes them,” smiles the 32-year-old. A trend-setter of sorts, he says, “I’m the one who spoke my mind in front of the media; now all major actors are doing it, too.”
