Calligraphy:
Boot Camp Part 2: Intermediate Italic, starts September 9, 8 weeks, Wednesday nights 7-9:15 pm. In this detailed learning series, students focus more in depth on refining and perfecting the Italic hand. Learn to use flourishes as secondary patterns to create overall shape of text, pen turns, writing on a curve, and examining and understanding historic specimens.
Calligraphy Fine Tuning, Saturday, September 12, 10:00 to 4:15 pm. This workshop is loosely structured and will be based on student needs, regardless
of proficiency level. We will focus on dissecting letterforms and numerals, and re-familiarizing ourselves with the foundation, stroke structure and spacing of basic alphabets.
Envelope Addressing and Etiquette, Saturday, September 19. Designed for those who wish to learn how to address envelopes using their existing calligraphy skills. Learn how to determine proper scale for small writing, formal and informal approaches to addressing, determining and setting up guidelines, centering techniques, and other tips and tricks that calligraphers use for an optimal result. We will also cover basic rules of etiquette, and postal regulations for mailing.
Calligraphy Patterns and Decorative Borders, Saturday, September 26. For creative students of any level, this is the perfect workshop for you to learn how to enhance and add flair to finished artwork and scrapbook pages. Move beyond letterforms to patterned edges, simply constructed borders, and linear decoration. Using broad-edged markers and watercolors, students will explore a wide variety of examples, as well as create their own, in this easy and fun step-by-step tutorial.
Callligraphy in the Celtic Style, 2 Saturdays, October 3 and 10. Rich in the history of the Irish culture, this two day workshop is perfect for beginners. Explore the foundation, structure, and distinctive hand of the Celtic alphabet. Learn letterforms, punctuation, numerals, spacing, and layout. Also called "uncial", this ancient alphabet is both beautiful and useful.
The Beauty of Watercolor Painting, Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18. This is a 2-day weekend workshop. On Saturday, students
will learn and experiment with the basics of watercolor painting, including: glazed, graded and bleeded washes, shaded shapes, wet and dry techniques, textures, tonal dimension, detail work, and atmospheric skies. On Sunday, using these learned techniques, each student will create a serene seascape suitable for framing. Guest Instructor: Janis Cutler Gear
Decorated Letters, Saturday, October 24. The illuminated letter has been used to highlight and enhance handwritten manuscripts and texts throughout history.
Learn how to create and decorate a unique freeform letter, and a simple Versal letter based on a system of historic techniques. From basic outlining to detailed, colored embellishments and applied gold leaf paint, these step-by-step methods are easy to learn and have many creative applications, from simple greeting cards to more formal documents.
Artists Retreat Day, Saturday, October 31.
Adventures in Layout and Design, 2 Saturdays, November 7 and 14. Join Kathy for this thought provoking two day workshop as she guides you through the basic concepts and rules of layout and design, and the "artist's creative process". Each student will design and execute their own completed piece, suitable for framing.
Signature Art, Saturday, November 21. Like your name, your signature is unique and personal to you. In this exciting one-day workshop, you will be guided through a step-by-step process to turn your signature into an original work of art. From pencil sketch to finished color, then to fascinating tryptych (3 panels of art), this workshop is fresh, easy and fun.
