WV Breeder-Owner Paul Carbenou says, “When the starting gate of any dog race track comes open and the dogs run out and chase sparky around the track, they all have one goal, “catch & kill that imaginary rabbit.” There is no competition between the dogs; they are focused only on the rabbit.
From the time these dogs are young pups they begin their training to race and hopefully catch “Sparky.” Depending on the dog’s stage of training, the “bait” is either placed in bags or hung onto the electric lure that goes around the track or just let loose in a “coursing park” which is nothing more than a large fenced in field. Either way, the young greyhound aggressively chases down the animal and malls it to death, and gets a taste of blood.
As training progresses, the dogs will automatically race after and kill the defenseless animals. At times, the dogs have on muzzles, but they do still manage to bite and maul the animal being used. After an actual race, every dog is given a “treat” from their handler. This in replacement of the dog actually being able to catch the mechanical lure.
