Over 1,000 downloads and a year later - which includes various Top 10 placings on Amazon.com's bestseller category lists, D.L. Shiloh is at work on his new novel about American life.
"Pookoo" was a satire of celebrity culture obsession. The novelist says this new novel is a departure from his first book.
"It's a departure in a few important ways," Shiloh said.
"It's not taking me 17 years - I've over halfway through and I've only been working on it since May, 2009. Subject-wise, it's a drama. I was looking to make an American take on the European classic. I also have a clearer idea of my purpose. I can sum it up in a log line and a tag line. I had the movies definitely in mind this time around. It's shorter - and I see short fiction as the future. We don't have time to invest in a huge ordeal. I'm doing my job if you get satisfaction from a book that can fit into your life."
The former high school disciplinary educator added this: "I think more people would read if they didn't think it was a chore. Many had to read in school because they had to and the choices were not contemporary enough. Writers have to compete with mass media technology."
Shiloh wakes at 5 a.m. weekdays, gets ready and usually begins writing well before 6 a.m. "I usually come home at the end of the day and am eager to begin. This book has instilled that sense of newness I used to get. Working on a project of 17 years (before) really tested you to be pumped up each time you wrote. I learned a lot writing "Pookoo" and in the time between."
Shiloh hopes to have the new work completed by late summer or early fall and then move on to a script and "The Pilgrim Commuter", a novel about modern life complete with a suburban family. "With a dark drama right now, it will be fun to switch to a story with highs and lows. Family stuff that people can identify with."
