With the recent explosion of acai berry hype, one might think that the acai berry was just discovered a few months ago, and whoever discovered it went straight to report his findings to Oprah, who then told the rest of us.  Although it turns out that the acai berry does deserve our attention as something to enhance a health-conscious lifestyle, its beginnings are a bit more humble than the hype would have us believe, and although we might arguably call it the miracle food of the season, it really is just a testament to how good nature is in general in providing the nourishment and health we need.

First, the acai berry is nothing new, it grows in Brazil where it has been consumed for ages, as is the norm for all types of edible fruit.  There has been legit and scientific research done on it, and findings point to the acai berry as being extremely high in antioxidants.  Antioxidants are of course something that we should strive to get enough of for their action of curbing free radicals that cause cell damage, delaying aging effects and giving greater resistance to disease.  So these advantages have been observed in those who have acai berry as part of their diet.  Some have also reported a decrease in appetite while energy is increased, therefore resulting in weight loss.  Although this has been attributed to the acai berry, scientific research pointing to this correlation is scant, so at this point, the weight loss claims of acai berry-based product marketers are unproven.

There is no question that adding acai berry to your diet is a good thing, but do know the facts first so you can pick an acai supplement that will actually give you all these benefits.  To get all the benefits of the acai berry, you will need to consume both pulp and juice.  Some products are just juice, while some have dried pulp.  Pick a product that gives you both.  Next, treat that acai berry supplement as what it is: a supplement, meaning that it should be part of a healthy diet, just as nutritionists have been telling us since there have been nutritionists.

Keep in mind that the acai berry is rich in antioxidants, true, but there are also other rich sources of antioxidants.  In berries and fruits, blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries also share the throne with the acai berry.  Additionally, russet potatoes, artichoke hearts, beans, olive oil, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, cinnamon, cloves, and oregano are also noted for their rich antioxidant properties.

So do take that acai berry supplement as a convenient way to boost the antioxidants in your healthy eating plan, but pick the right product, and know that the acai berry is just one of many items in the “miracle food” category.
