The 2008 regatta saw many advanced IRC boats manned by extremely skilled sailors competing in the event. To be held from the 12th to the 14th of June, the New York Club annual regatta is a part of the US-IRC Gulf stream series for IRC yachts and is also the first level of the New York Yacht Club Classic Yacht Series. This premier regatta commences with sailors competing in an around-the-island race on the 12thy of June which is followed by a two day traditional series of racing from the 13th to the 14th of June. This year the regatta comes with new additions to the original format like the skippers meet in the evening which is followed by a program wherein class winners of the around-the-island race will be awarded. Categories like the ‘Best Boat of the Day’ on both Saturday and Sunday along with ‘Most Family Members Onboard’ have been added to this year’s event. Efforts to promote the cause of the environment like a slide show presented by Sailors for the Sea raises issues about marine environmental issues and encourages marine conservation, will be an integral part of the regatta this year.
