About the Author

I am 51 years old and was born in Waltham, Massachusetts. I am one of eight children, fourth from the top. I have four brothers and three sisters. After spending only a couple of years in Massachusetts, our family moved to California and then to Florida. With the exception of a year spent on the island of Grand Turk and a bunch of small vacations, mostly camping or traveling around the United States, I have spent my life in Florida. Many of my childhood friends, from as far back as the fourth grade, are still living in the area. I have been married to Jill for about 22 years, she too has grown up in the area and we both attended Cocoa Beach High School in the 70’s. We have two boys, Bryan and Jonathan.

I was involved in minimal team sports growing up, mainly little league baseball. We lived close enough to the beach where I could ride my bicycle to the beach with a surfboard under my arm, which is where I would hang out if I wasn’t working. My first job was washing dogs at a poodle shop, and then I moved onto mowing lawns, restaurant work washing dishes and busing tables, managed a McDonalds, loaded trucks for UPS, then the next thirty years as a self employed painter and builder (only once did I build a two story spec house and try to sell it in the beginning of a six year real-estate depression, ---lesson learned, timing and location).

In high school, I was active in many of the clubs and did a little track and J.V. football, but my sports were wrestling and surfing. Because of always having to lose weight for wrestling, I was always running, especially along the beach at low tide. I never ran cross country, even though the coach approached me numerous times. I guess I incorrectly thought it wasn’t really a sport and that it wouldn’t be much fun. The funny thing was that I loved to run. While going to the community college, I would often run about eight miles one way in the morning and then another eight miles or so back home. Many of my current friends are some of the guys that were on the cross country team in high school, but I never really knew them very well until after graduation.

I’ve grown up camping on the islands between Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island and then after high school, moved on to camping in the Smokey Mountains and riding motorcycles. I love snow skiing, scuba diving, mountain hiking, fishing, sailing, movies and television with my family. Over the last few years, I have gotten involved in listening to books on tape while painting houses. Since then I have spent three years working on a surf book that is still not finished. Ralph, my brother, talked me into going with him from North Carolina to Bermuda and then on to New York harbor in a 21 foot flats boat. In doing this, we made it into Guinness Book of World Records™ for the longest non-stop oceanic voyage in a flats boat: 774 miles and also were recognized by the World Record Academy for the longest unescorted oceanic crossing in a flats boat: 1547 miles. Upon arriving in Bermuda, we had a relatively large welcome, I decided that I was writing the wrong book and started taking notes which eventually became my first book: Bermuda Suicide Challenge in a Flats Boat. www.RobertBrownBooks.com
