Cosmetic Surgery Abroad An Option For Brits

Brits have found another excuse to travel abroad for cosmetic surgery: taking an affordable extended holiday.

July 30, 2009 - PRLog -- For years, Central and South American countries like Costa Rica and Brazil have been marketing tummy tucks and breast augmentations as deluxe getaway packages that often include five-star accommodations, sightseeing tours, casinos and spa treatments.

But recently, more and more Brits are taking a liking to traveling to Southeast Asia for their nips and tucks. Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore were the most popular destinations for cosmetic surgery in the last few years, according to a survey of 7,000 Brits who’d traveled abroad for their procedures, while Spain and Italy were the most frequently visited European countries by UK travelers.

Brits also listed Canada as a desirable locale for cosmetic surgery because of its speedy appointments, reputable surgeons and language and cultural similarities.

This summer, the Middle East also started cashing in on cosmetic surgery tourism. Lebanon is the first country in the region to offer deals that include luxury summer camps for patients’ children. Surgical costs in Lebanon are equally as luring: a nose job is about 5000 euros less there than in the UK.

But Brits can seemingly find better deals wherever they travel. Another study found that Brits save more than 80 percent on cosmetic procedures by going abroad. In Poland, facelifts run 84 percent cheaper than in the UK, and a liposuction in Budapest can save UK travelers about 85 percent.

Besides costs and elaborate holidays, Brits cite quality of treatment, surgical expertise, reputation, patient safety and communication as factors in choosing where and which medical centers to have cosmetic procedures done. Concerns over the length of NHS waiting lists and the high cost of private healthcare in the UK are also sending patients overseas.

Yet international medical watchdog associations advise patients to do their homework on the certification and qualifications of physicians linked to these too-good-too-be-true deals. Many British physicians also warn that if surgery-related problems were to arise once a patient returns to Britain, UK insurance companies most likely won’t cover the costs for treatment.
