(White Plains, NY) – Thomas Lansen, M.D., F.A.C.S., a resident of Armonk, NY, and a principal of Brain & Spine Surgeons of New York in White Plains, was named to New York magazine’s annual list of the New York metropolitan area’s “best doctors” in the June 15-22, 2009 issue. This is the fifth year in a row that Dr. Lansen has made the prestigious New York list, and he is one of only two neurosurgeons in Westchester to be named this year.
This year’s list includes 1,107 physicians, all nominated by their peers. Physicians are evaluated according to their professional qualifications and reputation as well as their compassion in dealing with patients. Dr. Lansen excels in all of those areas. A board-certified neurosurgeon for more than 25 years, Dr. Lansen is co-director of the Gamma Knife Center at Northern Westchester Hospital, where he treats brain lesions and tumors without making an incision. In addition, he is the chief of neurosurgery at Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mount Kisco. He has also served as chief of neurosurgery at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers, Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, and Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
Well known in the field of brain and spine surgery, Dr. Lansen is skilled in using techniques that allow him to operate more precisely and less invasively. “Dramatic advances in neurosurgical devices and materials allow us to treat patients more effectively and at the same time reduce recovery time and post-operative discomfort,”
Dr. Lansen also has distinguished himself in academia. He served as acting chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery of New York Medical College in Valhalla, where he continues to teach as an associate professor. He is also an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven.
In 1992, Dr. Lansen served as president of the Westchester Medical Society, and is the author of a history of that 200-year-old organization. He also is the author of many neurosurgical publications.
Dr. Lansen received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his internship in General Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and his residency in Neurological Surgery at the University of Florida Medical Center. Dr. Lansen is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
