As the casual and summer jobs young people in Scotland traditionally use to fund travel dry up, increasing numbers of savvy Scots are using TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) as a way of bankrolling adventures to fantastic destinations around the globe. Unlike the market for casual work in Scotland at the minute, the demand for certified TEFL teachers around the world is massive: at present there are around 20,000 vacancies for TEFL jobs posted on the internet each month – everywhere from China and South Korea, to Ecuador and Japan.

The first step to getting one of these jobs teaching English abroad is getting a recognised TEFL qualification. Fortunately, ILA Scotland, a Scottish Government scheme that helps people pay for learning, makes getting TEFL qualified incredibly affordable for Scottish residents who earn £22,000 per year or less, or who are on benefits. Those eligible for ILA Scotland funding can claim £200 off the cost of a TEFL course with a recognised learning provider such as TEFL specialists i-to-i.

As i-to-i’s courses are already very good value, it means Scottish residents can use their £200 of funding to get TEFL qualified with i-to-i’s 40 hour online course, which costs £175. They can also enjoy big discounts if they want a more comprehensive qualification, such as i-to-i’s 120 hour combined TEFL course, which mixes classroom and online learning.

While ILA Scotland makes getting TEFL qualified affordable, i-to-i’s fantastic TEFL courses make it incredibly simple. Their online TEFL courses have been pioneering online learning since 2001, enabling people to study at a time and pace that suits. For those who like a more practical approach, i-to-i also offer highly interactive weekend courses. There are even combined courses which mix the two!

The huge demand for TEFL teachers means that once travellers have finished their course they’re in a great position to find work. i-to-i’s free job placement service can help people find fantastic teaching jobs in locations as diverse as Japan, Ecuador, China, Saudi Arabia, Thailand or even the Czech Republic. Those who spend their gap year or career break teaching abroad find themselves welcomed and integrated into the local community, rather than just being treated as passing tourists, offering travellers a unique chance to gain an insight into a totally different way of life. The money’s not bad either – for example salaries take a look at this article: http://www.onlinetefl.com/about-tefl/articles/how-much-ca...
