Boston-based ZeroEnergy Design’s high performance beach house in Truro, Massachusetts is the cover story in the July/August 2009 issue of Design New England, the 2009 National Association of Real Estate Editors’ Best Shelter Magazine ”for people who love one-of-a-kind houses.”
The story provides an intimate tour inside the home of a client who commissioned the environmentally sensible, modern beach home on Cape Cod. Design challenges included unusual space requirements, an ambitious time line, a magnificent west-facing view atop a coastal bank, and ambitious energy goals.
“The client wasn’t looking for an ostentatious street façade. They purchased the site for the beach and the magnificent view. The tapered form – in plan and roof plane – allows for both a demure street presence and an explosive ocean view“, says Stephanie Horowitz AIA, Managing Director at ZeroEnergy Design. “We couldn’t be more pleased to have the end result of our work prominently featured in one of the top regional architecture publications. “
The home features greatly reduced energy consumption due to efficiency from systems such as a geothermal heating and cooling, radiant floors for heat distribution, and superinsulated walls; and energy production from solar electric panels that produce nearly as much energy as the home uses through the year. The environmentally sensitive home also conserves water with specialty fixtures and native landscaping throughout the site.
The entire project was completed on time and within budget, just 20 months after the client hired ZeroEnergy Design – a true testament to the firm’s working relationship with the entire team.
