Many might assume the story of a kitchen company would be predictable, but Nottingham furniture designer and manufacturer recently re-branded from Davenport Cabinetworks to Sarah Davenport Design grasped the opportunity to be anything but. As the Working Lunch crew arrived at the Nottingham Showroom and Workshops to find a corset clad designer talking of passion through distinctive design whilst playing on her really rocking piano, the stage was set for a most unusual feature.
"We didn't want to talk about the obvious aspects of kitchens and home furniture, ie the design, the quality, the care that that has always run through our activity" says Sarah. "We wanted to show what makes us achieve these elements - what inspires us. So many companies these days seem fearful of being themselves and opt instead for a bland compromise that inhibits their development and opportunity.
If we truly plan to inspire passionate living and have a positive effect on our environment then we will lead by example and embody the idea of cherishing the most precious elements of life through brave, inventive and pleasurable activity. I intend to show that bespoke doesn't mean just another colour or another size but the multitude of choice that can be revealed though imaginative design. My mission is to contribute essentially to making the face of the kitchen industry more relevant, more exciting and more fulfilling."
Sarah has recently returned to her family business from a year researching into the best of classical and modern design throughout Europe in a project filmed for a documentary entitled 'Finding Beauty'. Next plans include the launch of the "Catwalk Kitchen" at the 2009 London Design Show .
