Fibertek, Inc. has been awarded the Laser System Engineering Support (LSES)
The Fibertek/Sigma Space team will provide laser design, fabrication and flight qualification testing service for the ICESat II mission Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) Instrument. The ICESAT II mission will measures changes in global ice sheet properties over time resulting from global climate change and help scientists assess the impact global warming on the planet.
In its selection statement NASA noted the strength of the Fibertek Team in the area of space-based lasers, the exemplary past performance of the team, and the comprehensive capabilities of the team in all areas of the statement of work.
“This award will enable our company to contribute key technologies and developments in the area of space-based lasers for use in the ATLAS instrument", said Dr. Floyd Hovis, VP of Fibertek. “Our partnership with Sigma Space will enable the team to deliver extraordinary services to NASA by combining Fibertek’s globally recognized space laser experience and leadership with Sigma's optical engineering work supporting the critical ICESAT II mission”.
Fibertek’s recent space flight hardware projects include: Multi-billion pulse space laser transmitters for the NASA CALIPSO mission, altimetry lasers for a Lunar Laser Rangefinding Instrument, next-generation altimetry lasers for the NASA Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) program, and several DOD sponsored space-based lidar programs.
Sigma Space is one of the fastest growing providers of optoelectronic aerospace instrumentation for NASA, DOD, and commercial customers. It produces pioneering instrumentation in lidar, laser ranging, attitude determination, spectroscopy, and radiometry for remote sensing and defense applications. Sigma received the NASA GSFC Contractor of the Year award for Products in 2007.
