Teaching Kids About Personal Finance Is Goal Of New Partnership

Leading nonprofit joins University of Florida in sponsoring summer camp for youth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jul 28, 2009 -
InCharge® Debt Solutions (IDS), one of the nation’s leading nonprofit credit counseling organizations, announced that it will co-present “Moola Venture Money Camp” with the University of Florida-IFAS Osceola County Extension Service from July 27-31 in Kissimmee, Florida.  The camp helps teenagers 14 to 18 years of age develop vital skills in budgeting, establishing credit, opening and managing bank accounts, writing checks and balancing checkbooks, preparing for job interviews, buying a car, investing money, and making career choices.

The camp is interactive, with hands-on activities and will be presented by IDS’ Certified Credit Counselors, University of Florida faculty, along with other “real world” business professionals.

“This is a unique partnership between an institute of higher learning and a nonprofit devoted to providing personal finance education,” said Laura Royer of the University of Florida.  “Both organizations feel strongly about the need for this type of program because so many young people are exposed to a culture of expensive lifestyles and debt facilitated by easy credit.  We hope to instill in them money management habits and the personal finance knowledge they will need to lead financially healthy lives.”

“These young people will soon need to make important financial decisions at one of the most vulnerable points in their lives, and it’s important to teach them about the proper use of credit now,” said Etta M. Money, IDS’ president.  “To get them started on the right foot, we’re putting $15 in a savings account for each participant.  The accounts will help teach these high school students about money management, and the Moola Venture Money Camp is an important resource to build on their financial literacy.”

InCharge Debt Solutions provides free counseling to consumers struggling with excessive debt by analyzing their financial situations and offers educational resources, possible solutions and budgeting assistance.  Organizations interested in partnering with IDS on programs like this or other personal finance education ventures are encouraged to contact Andy Williams at 407-532-5631 or email awilliam@incharge.org.  The IDS Web site is http://www.InCharge.org.
