The second edition of a popular textbook for patients considering or having undergone bariatric weight loss surgery is now available from Matrix Medical Communications (MMC). With four all-new chapters and updated information throughout, The Emotional First + Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery, Second Edition, by Dr. Cynthia Alexander, is filled with advice and practical strategies for patients dealing with the emotional difficulties that often accompany bariatric procedures.
Most patients entering bariatric surgery are filled with hope and motivation for their new post-operative life only to find that life after surgery is more stressful than they imagined. The Emotional First Aid + Kit, Second Edition, walks bariatric patients through their decision to have (or not have) weight loss surgery and the many challenges that will follow the procedure. Patients will find advice on preparing themselves psychologically for surgery, developing consistent exercise plans, and behavior modification. Alexander answers commonly asked questions from bariatric patients and offers advice on discussions to have with doctors, friends, and family members and tips for returning successfully to everyday social activities involving food.
While giving bariatric patients the tools to create the healthy lives for which they hoped, Alexander also analyzes the problems many patients face when they aren’t able to make the lifestyle changes needed to achieve their ultimate weight loss goal or to sustain their goal weight through long-term maintenance. The Emotional First + Aid Kit addresses these situations with practical solutions that create knowledgeable and successful patients.
Throughout each chapter are case studies that illustrate the struggles and successes that accompany bariatric surgery with real-life examples with which Dr. Alexander has been confronted in her practice. In an effort to create an “Emotional First Aid” tool, Alexander analyzes all possible outcomes of surgery, offers ways to prevent relapse and transfer of addiction.
As a practicing psychologist, Dr. Alexander has witnessed the trials and successes that accompany bariatric surgery. Through this experience, she has sought to aid bariatric patients psychologically after surgery by giving them the tools to find comfort without food and respond to their own reactions and the reactions of others to their weight loss. She states, “This book is useful because it is filled with psychological techniques to help patients take control of their own health.”
