“We live at a time when young children are being victimized by other children who, for whatever reason, have no real understanding about the value of kindness and the wrongfullness and negative effects of bullying“, says Bob Corson of Urbanna Virginia. When Corson as Mr Christian, performs his program The Magic of Kindness at elementary schools and day care centers throughout the country. not only are the children amazed and entertained they also get important messages about kindness and bullying.
We capitalize on the awe that magicians have on young children to get our message across, says Corson
“When I retired from teaching college, I wanted to give back to the community. I have always performed magic to illustrate points I was making while teaching at Temple University, The University of Phoenix and St Joseph’s College in Standish Maine. I did substitute teaching at grades Kindergarten through the 5th grade to better understand the children and the extent of the bullying problem. I have also researched the topic of bullying extensively to really understand the problem“, says Corson,
“One of the real problems with bullying is that the majority of bullying instances that occur in schools never gets reported. In my program I stress to the children the importance of letting someone in higher authority know when they are being bullied. We also provide the children with valuable strategies for dealing with bullies. We also provide the schools with supplemental tools they can use to reduce bullying such as enrolling children in the Kindness Club, a school organization that helps promote kindness in the school.” says Corson
“Bullying has been associated with the rise in school violence, teen suicide, childhood obesity, teen homicide and the increase in the school drop out rate. School administrators need to to “go out of the box” to develop proactive solutions to the bullying problem. We hope that programs like ours can be of some help“, says Corson
