Sponsored by the Euro-Asian Bridge, the Iranian Society of Cardiac Surgeons, and the Iranian Heart Association, the congress aimed to update and introduce the newest methods of cardiovascular surgery and the science of care and rehabilitation of heart disease to physicians, specialists, general practitioners, and nurses. Hybrid aortic surgery, current problems in heart transplantations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, surgery of heart failure, surgical treatment of complex and complicated thoracic aneurysms, surgical treatment of aortic arch aneurysms were some of the main topics of this congress.
Dr Cherian had been invited to share his experiences on the use of indigenously developed tissue engineered xenografts (grafts taken from suitable animal parts). Frontier Lifeline is the only unit in Asia, to have its own tissue engineered conduits including bovine pericardium (tissue covering the heart). Other indigenously prepared products which are derived from both porcine (from pigs) and bovine (from buffaloes) sources are jugular valved conduits which are particularly useful in the correction of complex cardiac diseases.
In this instance, Dr Cherian explained through this talk ‘Geometrical Left Ventricular Reconstruction with Novel Indigenous De-cellularised Bovine Pericardium - Early Experience’ the rationale behind using indigenously developed bovine pericardium which is as follows:
o Shape and contour preservation –geometrical correction as conceptualised by Jatene.
o Restoration of function (contractility)
o Reducing akinetic area effectively
o Ease of handling
o Minimum perioperative bleeding
o Blends and functions like a native myocardium
More than 50 international medical figures from 20 countries around the world, including India, Canada, Turkey, Britain, France, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Switzerland, Rumania, Croatia, the U.S. and Germany attended the three-day event.
