These scholarships go out to those students across the United States that are most committed to furthering their field through research and technology development.
This June 2009 scholarship recipient is Brynn Harris. Brynn is from San Francisco, California and is attending the University of Kansas pursuing a degree in nursing. Her particular interest in research is related to music therapy and dementia patients. Through her literature review she has found studies that have shown an increase in activity level, an improvement in cooperation between the patient and their care providers, and an improvement in patient sleeping patterns. She explains that some of her literature review showed an increase in melatonin levels at the end of music therapy sessions, which could explain the reduction in aggressiveness and anxiety in dementia patients. Her future research would include better understanding the ability of music therapy to decrease synapse deterioration with music therapy.
