A tremendous amount of research has been done about obesity and its affect on health. A list of ailments has been linked to caring excess weight. You can now add cognitive ability. Research studies conducted in England has shown that obese individuals more readily develop dementia as opposed to people of normal weight. A few scientists believe that carrying excess fat on ones torso can lead to decreased brain function later in life.
Scientists from Kaiser Permanent in California studied the records of 10,000 people between the ages of 40-45 years old from 1964-1973 and found that the 7% of individuals developed dementia. People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 were 74% more likely then those people who maintained a healthy bodyweight through out the course of their life.
This is just more supporting evidence of how important exercise and nutrition is to quality of life as we get older. Making healthy lifestyle choices and regular exercise will slow the aging process and make life more enjoyable as we age.
