Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie “Bruno” features such an offensive lead character that the name Bruno is becoming verboten in children’s literature.
Not realizing the film would be released the same time as her new children’s book, The Wise Old Boar, children’s author Margaret Merry also named her lead character Bruno. But in Merry’s case, the titular character is not an Austrian homosexual boor bent on breaking every rule of political correctness, but is instead a boar, as in wildlife.
Written and illustrated by Merry, The Wise Old Boar is based on the wildlife and mountain landscapes of Granada, Southern Spain, where the British artist lives.
Her tale is about Bruno, known to the other animals as The Wise Old Boar, because they always seek his counsel whenever they have problems. But in fact, Bruno is actually stupid and his advice so silly that when it doesn’t work, the animals blame themselves for failure. This silliness is about the only thing that Merry’s Bruno has in common with Cohen’s.
In Germany, education officials have ordered a character named Bruno in a new children’s book to be renamed with the Turkish name Aydan, because they didn’t want to expose children to a character with the same name as Bruno in the film. The movie’s Bruno praises Hitler, while he also offends Muslims, disabled people and just about everyone else. The German officials also demanded that Muslims, women and handicapped characters be added in equal numbers to the book to offset insults laid upon them in the film.
Merry insists her book is “an innocent tale and it was never my intention it should cause offense to anyone,” urging readers to see for themselves.
