Some of the most important beaches of Santa Cruz are also the most important beaches of Costa Rica. If we list them from north to south of the Guanacaste coast line we find playas del Coco, Brasilito, Conchal, Potrero Beach, Flamingo Beach, Grande Beach, Tamarindo, Langosta, Ostional, Nosara and many others less visited buy tourists and some of them with no public acces to the beach area


Playas del Coco (Coco Beach)

Playas del Coco is close to Liberia. To get there take the road Sardinal-Playas del Coco. This road has a distance of 38 kms, 1hr approx. Playas del Coco has a huge variety of hotels, casinos, discos and restaurants. This is a popular beach in Santa Cruz because it is very easily reached and near Liberia and its airport. Playas del Coco is the perfect place to party or to take multiple tours.  It is the most accessible and frequently visited beach in this province. The scenery consists on high hills and cliffs, this is a great location to have fun. The main attractions are the tourist facilities, the beach and the sun. You may find hotels for all budgets. This is like a little city right next to the beach. For those looking for activity and night life this could be a clever choice.

Playa Conchal

This beautiful white sand beach of blue intense waters has approximately 1.5 kilometers in length. Take your time to observe the white sand that is composed mainly of fragments of shells. Its coastline is surrounded by a lush tropical dry forest. Playa Conchal is ideal for swimmers. Its scenic beauty is one of its main attributes. Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches of Costa Rica. Playa Conchal has one of the biggest first class beach front resorts in the area and is perfect for family or romantic vacations.

Playa Flamingo

This 2 kilometer vast beach with white sand and blue waters has some gentle waves ideal for swimmers. It is one of the most visited beaches in Costa Rica, with an accelerated development of tourism and trade. Playa Flamingo offers luxury hotels, cabins, cottages, campgrounds and a nice little commercial center with a very cozy restaurant. Thanks to its marine wealth Flamingo is one of the main meeting places for fishing enthusiasts and professionals. It is also one of the favorite places for scuba diving. It also offers marine services of the highest quality with its marina. Flamingo's nightlife is fairly attractive even though it is a relatively calm place if we compare it to Tamarindo Beach.

Playa Potrero

Bay beach, with  grayish sand and  blue water, with waves of moderate mild, ideal for swimming, fishing, diving and other water sports and sunbathing. Features huge vegetation and a lush mangrove estuary, with an estimated area of 5 kilometers. It is very close to the beautiful Flamingo beach, which in turn offers quality marine services. It has hotels, cabins, lodges and camping areas. Although tourism development has increased in recent years, Playa Potrero is still a beach in a quiet environment. From  every part of this beach you can observe the Catalina Islands that are divers’ favorite place in the Guanacaste Area.

Tamarindo

White sand bay beach with blue waters and waves ranging from moderate to strong. It has a coast of approximately 3.5 kilometers long surrounded by lush vegetation. Tamarindo is one of the most visited beaches in Costa Rica, with a strong tourism development. Hotels for all tastes, cottages, cabins, camping areas, offering the visitor all the amenities needed for a thoroughly pleasant stay. It also has  many restaurants, shops, supermarkets, casinos, discos and bars. It is ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, diving, horseback riding, surfing and other water sports. Probably the best beach location in this area for night life.

Playa Nosara

Surrounded by a 3.5 kilometer black sand beach, a blue sea with moderate to strong waves and abundant flora and fauna. Its natural beauty is ideal for ecotourism. It is part of Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, created to protect the turtles. The impressive south cliffs give great magnificence to the landscape. You may access by plane or car but the driving is quite long.

Playa Hermosa

Gray sand beach and refreshing blue water is the perfect description of Playa Hermosa (Beautiful Beach). It has a horseshoe-shaped bay, with about two kilometers long, surrounded by lush vegetation. The beauty of this beach lives up to the name. It has luxury hotels, cabins, bungalows, restaurants and all the facilities for a relaxing and entertaining holiday, while the access roads are in good condition. It has one of the most well known resorts for Costa Ricans for several decades. Condovac, now called Villas Sol playa Hermosa.


Playa Ostional

Playa Ostional(ostional beach) is a long beach of dark sand and blue sea, with more of 3 kilometers of breathtaking beauty. It is part of Ostional National Wildlife Refuge and one of the main spawn points where sea turtles appear, mainly Olive Ridley turtles. During the nesting period it is simply an impressive spectacle to witness these sea turtles.

Playa Brasilito

Gray sand beach, blue waters and very lush vegetation are the main components of Playa Brasilito. The village of Brasilito has little tourism development, unlike other nearby beach towns, although it has the facilities needed to go on vacation and it is within walking distance of attractive beaches such as Playa Conchal. Ideal for tourists and bathers who like calm and less crowded environments. It is a good stop for restaurants for those staying in the nearby beaches.


These are the most famous and popular places of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste. They remind us the culture and all the traditions that Costa Rica has.
