SEATTLE – Quick quiz – What’s the overlap between Alpine folk music and the iPhone? Time’s up, and the answer is that you can now learn how to yodel with the fun new iPhone app U2 Can Yodel, now available for free in the iTunes store from Seattle-area toymaker Webb Nelson and development firm Substantial.
The new app features master yodeler Kerry Christensen who yodeled up a storm early on this season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. An animated Christensen is the guide walking iTunes downloaders from around the world through how to transition from their chest voice to their head voice as they learn the basics of the art of yodeling. Users can then strut their stuff in Yodeloke, a call-and-response session with Christensen, where they can hear how they sound next to a true yodel expert in various yodel styles (Alpine, Cajun, and Yiddish to name but a few). Users can even save their sessions to track their progress.
Once users have gotten their bearings, they can head onto the Freestyle mode, where they can practice or show off by yodeling over a selection of instrumental tracks. The freestyle mode can act as a social competition, allowing yodelers of all ages to show off their new talent. Freestyle mode features instrumental tracks of varying skills that can be used to challenge the mastery level of any U2 Can Yodel user.
“There’s certainly no other app out there quite like this one,” said Donte Parks with Substantial. “It’s an easy skill to pick up, and it’s fun for everyone. There’s really no age boundary here - it could be the next pub game, youth club challenge or fun activity on college campuses. We hope lots of people pick it up while it’s available as a free download for a very limited time!”
As a special feature, U2 Can Yodel will also include Christensen’
