July 21, 2009 - PRLog -- Bath in Somerset County, England has always been a favorite holiday destination of the titled and of the masses, particularly during the summer months. And now Smooth Hound would like to announce that just in time for the summer they are offering lodging discounts for travelers to attend all of the special events.
Bath is known the world over for it’s Ancient Roman Baths, which are fed by a natural hot spring. Visitors to the area can visit these baths, although they are no longer open for bathing, as they pose a serious health hazard to the public. When built by the Romans the pools were lined with over 20 layers of lead, and as such the water would be toxic to bathers. For those looking to indulge, there are a number of spas in the area that can provide an equally enjoyable experience.
Only during the summer months, however, from July 1st through August 31st, the baths are open at night for something called “The Roman Baths by Torchlight”. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of the ancients, while costumed interpreters tell you about what life was like during that time. The Roman Baths are beautiful during the day, but simply stunning at night, like entirely by torches.  This tour will be handicapped accessible.
Another highlight that Bath offers is the Jane Austen experience. Jane Austen was possibly one of the most gifted authors of modern times, and for a period of 5 years she made the city of Bath her home. Now the Bath Tourist Information Centre has put together a series of events called “Jane Austen’s Bath”.  There is a self guided walking tour that takes you around the city to some of Jane’s favorite locations. You can visit The Tap Room, where people have been “Taking the Waters” for several centuries. The Tap Room draws warm spring water for guests to drink, and it is reputed for it’s healing qualities. If you are interested in having the most authentic experience possible, Smooth Hound can book your stay in an authentic Georgian hotel, so that you can live as Jane did.
Perhaps one of Bath’s most famous, or infamous, guest was Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. It was while she was on holiday in Bath that she met Lady Elizabeth Foster, Bess to those who knew her, and became friends with her. Bess would later go on to have an affair with the Duke of Devonshire which lasted for the rest of the Duchesses life and upon her death the Duke married his mistress.
In 2007 filming began on a movie starring Keira Knightly, which portrayed the life of the Duchess. Appropriately titled “The Duchess”, some portions of the film were in fact filmed in Bath at different historic locations. However, this is not the first movie to be filmed in the area. As such, Bath Tourism Plus and the Bath Film Office have created a walking tour for visitors to see the many locations used in films such as “The Duchess”, “Vanity Fair”, and “Harry Potter”. These tours last about an hour and a half and begin at The Tap Room.
