“My Husband, The Cheap Bastard” to Hit the Stores in August 2009

What started as a question of how many men out there are stingy and thrift-minded became a project, a blog, and finally the book, My Husband the Cheap Bastard, co-authored by newlyweds Amy Gayheart and David Kuoch. Stories from wives fed up with the cheap ways of their men outdo each other in detailing the true stories of what their miserly misters will go through to save a buck. Included are stories of dollar-store madness and angling for expired baked goods, coffee refills gone wild and wine-and-cheese bingeing at the latest art gallery opening. Kuoch and Gayheart discover that one man’s savvy is a woman’s tres tacky. This is not a "how to" guide, but an exposé shining light on the techniques and stories of these anonymous “Kings of Thrift.”

“My wife thinks I’m frugal.” Says Kuoch. “I was raised in a family that valued thrift. We were always learning small lessons in penny-pinching: Why pay retail? Buy in bulk! Clip coupons! Save for a rainy day. In many cultures, being thrifty is thought comparable to being wise.”

It was an ongoing joke to newlyweds Kuoch and Gayheart, one at which both laughed: “my husband the cheap bastard.” Gayheart would shake her head at Kuoch’s means of saving a few cents; Kuoch couldn’t understand why his wife would spend more than she had to. It was as much a commentary on the sexes as it was on their respective upbringings.

Kuoch wondered how many other men out there were stingy/thrift-minded like him. He didn’t have to look far: A close friend, a successful surgeon, refused to tip a wait staff more than ten percent. Another pal, a prominent partner in a law firm, haggled with clerks at the department store.
