Illinois-shaped Rock to Hit Ebay Auction Site Soon
Collectors who remember the frenzy of bidding and news coverage over the Illinois-shaped cornflake that appeared on EBay last year will soon get to see act two. An Illinois collector plans on placing his Illinois-shaped rock on EBay’s auction site in the near future. Measuring slightly less than 1.5 inches tall, the rock bares an almost perfect resemblance to Illinois, far surpassing that of the cornflake which sold for over $1,300 in 2008. Being much more durable and humidity resistant than the cornflake, the current owner expects lively bidding to occur for his Illinois rock.
Baring an extraordinary offer from Ripley’s, Illinois museums, or other specialty collectors in the meantime, the Illinois rock will be listed on EBay in early August. The purchaser of the Illinois cornflake in 2008 actually hailed from Austin, Texas and is the owner of a trivia website who planned to capitalize on the notoriety of his purchase to attract more visitors to his new traveling museum.
It’s not uncommon for wealthy individuals who are benefactors to major institutions to acquire unique pieces like these and donate them to museums so that all of the residents of the state can view the piece. Aside from the charitable tax deduction for the benefactor, the museum gains one more unique draw for new visitors.
