It is these teaching methods that have contributed to such a high success rate. So, how do Thai language courses at LILS make it easy for anyone to learn Thai? Based on the scientific research of Dr. James J. Asher, Prof. Blaine Ray, and Stephen Krashen the Thai language courses at LILS are based on the following principles: 1. Learn through doing, touching, feeling and seeing, as well as listening. As children learning to speak our native language, we engage all of our senses to learn. This means that the language becomes deeply engrained within us. Students of LILS perform actions from instructions provided in the Thai language. These methods fine tune their listening comprehension and enable them to associate actions, objects and emotions directly with the Thai word they are learning. Moreover, the majority of students find it is fun to learn this way, which further increases their chance of success. 2. Learn to think in Thai. By associating an action, emotion or object directly with the Thai language, rather than translating from their native language, students learn to communicate more effectively with Thai people. As the words become deeply engrained within them through the methods adopted in point one above, they learn to think directly in the Thai language. 3. Variation is the mother of learning. One thing that all teachers and schools will agree upon is that repetition is a key component to learning anything. However rather than providing students with lists of vocabulary to memorise, LILS introduces students to the same words repeatedly in varied scenarios and formats. Whilst vocabulary lists are provided to students each week, these are used only as a backup. The repetition is provided in role-play, computer games, videos and sound files. So much variation is provided that students tend to remember the words without even realising they are learning. The words become a part of them, and they remember them for a lot longer. 4. Learn Thai with energy LILS recognises that when the glucose levels of students drops, so does their ability to learn. As a result, they ensure that students receive regular breaks, and provide energy fuelling, healthy snacks to ensure students glucose levels are maintained throughout the day.
