Buy a travel guide to your destination, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Read up on lodging options and neighborhoods where accommodations are plentiful.
Plan your arrival and departure dates. If possible, choose off-season dates when you may be able to save money on lodging.
Ask whether there are special rates or if a membership (AAA, frequent flier) entitles you to a further discount. Sometimes discounts are available for military or government employees, or even for just using a certain credit card. Those are the kind of deals agents won't normally tell you about.
