I am sure that most people are aware that the quickest and most cost effective way to revitalize a living space is with a new paint color. If you're looking to make a bold statement, take it a step further by adding a paint stripe to a hallway, office or bedroom. This is a way to create a sense of drama and really draws your eye around the room. Depending on the width and quantity of stripes you use, stripes can act as artwork on your walls, keeping the money in your pocket that you might otherwise have spent on art prints, frames and matting. The possibilities are endless when striping a wall so I have added a few photos as a source of inspiration for those of you wanting to have some fun with stripes.....read more
Project checklist:
1. paint
2. blue painters tape (peels off the wall easily)
3. wall brushe, trim brush and rollers
4. paint trays
5. measuring tape
6. level (a laser level is best for larger areas)
7. stir sticks (for mixing paint)
8. drop cloth (to protect your flooring)
9. ladder or extension pole for high areas
10. paint primer (if painting over a dark color)

Step one: prepare the area around you. cover flooring with drop cloth and move all furnishings to the center of the room or a hallway to prevent damage.

Step two: Clean the surface to be painted with a wet sponge. this will remove all dust and cobwebs, allowing the paint to roll on smoothly and stick to the wall without peeling. Allow surface area to dry before painting.

Step three: Fill any holes with spackle and allow to dry completely and remove dust thoroughly before painting.

Step four: Once you have decided on the stripe design, using your measuring tape and laser level, you can now measure the width of the stripes. Divide the wall into even increments, adjusting the width to fit your wall or for the look you want. Using a colored pencil that matches the stripe color, make a light hash mark at each increment. Draw the vertical lines. (or horizontal if this is the direction you are going) Using the level, lightly extend the hash marks vertically from ceiling to baseboard (or horizontally from wall to wall). Periodically measure the stripes to make sure they remain parallel and even.

Step 5: The prep work is done and you are now ready to prime and paint! Cut in the edges of the stripe with the paint brush making sure to cover the pencil line. Cut in along the ceiling with a trim brush. Reload the paintbrush as needed so the color is opaque and even. Fill in the center using long strokes. Repeat for each remaining stripe and touch up any uneven spots
