10 Things You Need to Know About Tamiflu

With swine flu threatening to reach pandemic proportions, the demand for Tamiflu has never been higher. With so many comments circulating in the media about this drug, we give you the facts

1. Tamiflu works by preventing the virus replicating and infecting adjacent cells, thereby containing the virus and lessening symptoms

2. Tamiflu can be taken in two ways. Firstly it will treat symptoms, alternatively it can be taken as a prophylaxis after coming into close contact with someone who has flu

3. If you are taking Tamiflu to treat symptoms, it must be taken within 48 hours from the onset of the first signs of flu. In this case the dosage is one capsule, twice a day for 5 days

4. If Tamiflu is being taken for prevention, then the recommended dose is one capsule a day for 10 days. You should never take Tamiflu for more than 6 weeks consecutively

5. Very few people experience side effects but the most common are nausea and vomiting but these can be symptoms of influenza as well. Some people can develop a rash whilst on Tamiful, this is a side affect of the medication. Rashes are not a symptom of flu

6. There is an alternative to Tamiflu, Relenza, the active ingredient of which is delivered by way of an inhaler but it is not suitable for children under 5

7. Tamiflu is suitable for most people to take although children require a dosage adjustment based on weight for Tamiflu. Get the advice of a medical professional on what this adjustment should be

8. Tamiflu can be safely purchased independently online from reputable websites such as www.theonlineclinic.co.uk which are UK registered pharmacies. Reputable websites will not prescribe Tamiflu for children

9. Expect to pay around £120 per course of treatment

10. The NHS is offering a ‘flu buddy’ system where you will be given a voucher number which you can give to a friend who can collect your prescription and medication on your behalf.
