It is alleged that silk proteins can have a beneficial effect on the skin and hair, and while silk proteins are widespread in beauty products, the advantages of silk pillowcases may not be so widely recognised.
Silk contains cellular albumen which can help to speed up the metabolism of skin cells and thus reduce the signs of aging. In tangible terms, silk satin or charmeuse pillowcases are smooth, cool to the touch, and luxurious.
Rita Patra, Managing Director of Patra Selections, says “They’re lovely to sleep on. Hairdressers used to use silk scarves to smooth out frizzy hair, and silk pillowcases work in the same way. They’re smoothing, they don’t leave you with a wrinkled face when you wake up, they stay cool all through the night, and they feel very luxurious.”
Patra reports that after an article in the Telegraph last year extolling the benefits of silk pillowcases, sales rose dramatically. “They also make great wedding presents. It’s hard to find something for both the bride and groom, and silk is now an affordable luxury.”
