Little World Changes In Action

Dream Village founder speaks to the importance of youth activism

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jul 16, 2009 -
New York, NY – Suneet Bhatt, founder of Dream Village, an award winning children’s book initiative that uses picture books and the web to help children explore and address pressing global issues, is speaking out on the importance of youth activism. On July 14th, Suneet launched a blog series titled “Kids Can and Kids Did” on Green Options, a community and network of blogs dedicated to helping you figure out what sustainability means to you.

The emphasis of the series is literal, highlighting opportunities that “Kids Can” pursue and opportunities that “Kids Did” in their communities already, to get involved and make a difference. The goal is to serve as a resource on opportunities for children to change the world, while also serving up the best examples of little world changes in action.

One of the first articles in the series is an example of how a group of students is engaging in the community and organizing for social change. Margot Bloch (8-years old) and her friends in the Youth Activist Club at Piney Branch Elementary School in Tacoma Park, Maryland have taken up the fight against such waste in their Elementary School Cafeteria by focusing on getting rid of Styrofoam trays and going back to the reusable, hard-plastic trays with a dishwasher.

“Margot and her friends at Piney Branch Elementary are evidence that anyone with passion, drive, and determination can make their voice heard,” says Dream Village founder Suneet Bhatt. “At Dream Village, we believe these children are exceptional, but are in no way, the exception to the rule. Children everywhere are making little world changes every single day.”

The series will be featured under the sub-heading “Eco-Child’s Play”, which promotes “Green Parenting”.

About Dream Village:
Dream Village is a start-up social enterprise with core team members based in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The organization was officially formed in November 2008, after winning $10,000 in start-up funding from Ideablob, a small business plan competition run by Advanta, one of the largest issuers of small business credit cards (with an office in Philadelphia). Dream Village’s first book, “Saved by the Well”, makes understanding the global water crisis fun and educational for children in elementary school. The book launched in conjunction with World Water Week 2009. Dream Village has two additional books due out later this year: “The World’s Greatest Pillowfight”, which teaches children how to bring their own difference making ideas to life; and “Priceless: Arvind’s Story”, which highlights the moral courage of a young boy raised under the most difficult circumstances in India. You can learn more about Dream Village by visiting their kids’ website (http://www.dream-village.org) or their corporate site (http://corporate.dream-village.org).
