PRLog (Press Release) - Jul 13, 2009 -
Sweet grass is a tall, wild grass, growing in areas of the U.S. northwest and southern Canada. It has long been a sacred plant for Native Americans. The dried leaves and flowers are woven into baskets, and the long, sweet-musty scented leaves are braided and burned in Native American purification ceremonies. The smoke from sweet grass encourages positive influences gives a person protection and carries prayers up to the Creator. Once common, sweet grass has become rare due to development, cattle-grazing, harvesting and wheat growing.
The plant is harvested by cutting grass in early to late summer at the desired length. Sweetgrass harvested after the first frost has little or no scent and is less desirable for basktry. Basketweavers sun-dry cut sweet grass until it is dry and brittle. The brittle sweet grass must be soaked in warm water until it becomes pliable. The pliable sweet grass is typically braided into thick threads and then redried for use.
We find that the Canadien sweetgrass is of the highest quality. The rich smell of Canadien sweetgrass is very pleasing and highly sought after. We sell the Canadien sweetgrass because of these reasons.
