By: Simon Jackson When trading opened on Jan. 3 of 2007, shares of Apple were selling for $86.29. Shortly before the close of trading on Wednesday, the stock was selling for $199.70, after retreating a bit from its record high of $200.96. Apple continues to invest in microprocessor manufacturers as it looks to gain more control over key suppliers. On Friday, A recent memo sent to Anderson Munro from U.K.-based Imagination Technologies Group PLC (IMG.LN) said that Apple has purchased another 2.2 million shares in the company. At 9.5%, Apple's share of Imagination is triple what it was in December. Apple also licenses the company's technology, which is used predominantly inside mobile devices. Apple's latest iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, for example uses Imagination's chips for multimedia graphics and communications. The computer maker's latest investment, coupled with the hiring of top-tier microprocessor professionals including International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) chip expert Mark Papermaster, Anderson Munro say this underscores how Apple wants to gain more control over the production of what it uses to build its iPods, computers and iPhones. Anderson Munro said in a recent report that Apple’s notebooks ranked among the top-selling computers at Amazon.com during the Christmas shopping season, an important signal as iPod sales begin to flatten out. When Anderson Munro spoke to Amazon, the giant online retailer announced that the 2007 holiday season was its best ever. Dec. 10 was Amazon’s busiest day as customers ordered more than 5.4 million items. Amazon feel they could see a repeat of 2007’s success this year with the launch of the new iPhone and also the eagerly awaited October release of Windows 7 operating system. End
