Beginning on August 4th, Columbus based dance company MÁS y Mambo will begin teaching New York Style On2 Salsa classes in an 8 week series format. The class will be titled "Salsa Essentials,"
"What makes this class special is that it allows someone that has no dance background, let alone salsa background, to go through a guided series of classes that will give them the tools they need to feel comfortable dancing socially," said Instructor Mike Poe. Instructor Shanelle Hinkle-Moore confirmed, "at this time, we know of no one else in Columbus that is offering a New York style salsa class in a series format."
Salsa dancing has become a worldwide phenomenon in recent years with conventions being held in major cities all over the world. Performances and dancers have appeared in major media outlets on television and in major motion pictures. The New York style, also known as Eddie Torres style, emphasizes intricate turn patterns and precise body movement to be dictated by the rhythms found salsa music. Known for it's linear style and accentuating the second beat of the measure, the New York style tends to highlight the more grounded and emotive feel of salsa dancing.
